Read our Test Drive Review of the Subaru Forester That off-road capability is something to consider.

Nobody is driving a Rogue or an Escape off-road. Venturing off the freeway, the versatile Forester provides minimum ground clearance of 8.7 inches, a quarter of an inch higher than the Nissan Rogue and a half an inch higher than the Ford Escape. The competitive Ford Escape is smaller by 10 cubic feet. It’s competitive with the Honda CR-V, but the seats fold flatter, making it easier to fill. Fold the seats down and that volume increases to 76 cubic feet, enough to fit about 23 carry-on suitcases. With all the seats in place, you can fit 31.1 cubic feet of junk in the cargo area (ever so slightly less in Foresters with the sunroof). This makes the Forester between $1,200 and $1,500 less expensive than any other vehicle in its class, but that’s not the whole story. Subaru, on the other hand, makes all-wheel drive standard in every vehicle it sells except the sporty BRZ. Even Jeep still offers its entry-level compact crossovers in front-wheel drive (FWD), which largely negates the purpose of owning a crossover for most people. Read our Test Drive Review of the Kia Sportage The Kia Sportage may be a few years old at this point, but it remains one of the best compact SUVs, not to be confused with the Kia products built during the Clinton administration. Intuitive knobs and buttons take the place of fussy touchscreen controls, which make accessing the infotainment system a challenge at highway speed. We still love the Kia Sportage’s entertainment and climate controls, which are immediately recognizable and functional the second you sit behind the wheel. The turbocharged SX pushes them aside with 240 horsepower, still offering as much as 28 mpg on the highway in the front-wheel-drive configuration. Most of the vehicles in the compact SUV class-we’re looking at you, Honda CR-V-are equipped with engines that turn out respectable, but not particularly enjoyable, 190-horsepower ratings. The SX Turbo starts at $33,750, which isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s on par with the upper trim level price of all the other vehicles in its class. Slightly smaller than the RAV4 is the Kia Sportage SX. Tech features in the Limited include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad as standard, along with bespoke navigation and an 11-speaker JBL sound system. It’s practical inside, with cubbies everywhere and all of the controls are simple to operate, unlike the current family of similar products from the premium brand at Lexus. The Limited trim is the most luxurious of the available RAV4 trim levels, but you’ll never confuse this with something from BMW. But the RAV4 Hybrid Limited offers everything that has made this vehicle a success since it was introduced, along with a hybrid drivetrain that provides 219 combined net horsepower with 41 mpg highway and 38 mpg city. Even the TRD Off-Road is about a grand cheaper. There is no more expensive RAV4 trim than the one we’re recommending here. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limitedīest for: Families with two kids or fewer

We’re here to help you choose the best crossover based on a series of attributes that people just like you think are important. But even if they all look the same and do similar jobs, there are advantages and disadvantages to each. That’s not necessarily the case with the utter sameness of the bulk of crossovers for sale today.

The plus for those Land Rovers is that you know one when you see one. Land Rover doesn’t want you to think they make one, but the Range Rover Velar, the Land Rover Discovery, Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover all share the same platform used in the Jaguar XE and XF. There’s one from every single mainstream vehicle manufacturer in the United States. For the 2022 model year, there are more than 70 crossover vehicles on the market.
